Kubuntu 12.04 LTS “Precise Pangolin” has been released together with Ubuntu 12.04 almost three weeks ago.
And to summarize: yet another buggy version of Kubuntu/KDE “Software Collection” or shall we say “Bugs Collection”?

The pain soon reaches the user right after upgrade/installation:
that piece of crap (sorry there are no other words) called “KMix” is back unstable like the old “good” days, it crashes more often than you can think “How the hell this could go into production”?
Few clicks to report the bug and I see it is already fixed in KDE 4.8.3, unluckily too late for Kubuntu 12.04 release date.

Then I tried to install kubuntu-restricted-extras and I was happy to see finally the package manager can ask interactive questions during installation (like EULAs), but installation of Adobe Flash was postponed for who knows reason. Then a little systray icon appeared with a light bulb saying “Hey maybe you wanted to install some additional software” or something like that, I click on it and it appears this dialog.

What the hell is this and how the f**k am I supposed to work on?

Well after moving/resizing the silly window I can find the “Run action” button and I click on it… guess what? Everything fails because the script searches for “gksudo” which of course is not present in Kubuntu because they have “kdesudo”.
Result: EPIC FAIL!

And yes that was under a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.04 on VirtualBox… not sure if related or not.
That was a similar bug than the one found ages ago, the point is always one: window sizes are totally untested.
There is no doubt that Canonical wants to focus on ONE flavour only see their announcement to drop support for Kubuntu after the 12.04 release and honestly after I saw almost every release of Kubuntu from the 6.06 till 12.04 I cannot say that really surprised me.
Kubuntu/KDE has been always buggier and less user friendly than Ubuntu, always and almost on everything the user wants to do nowadays.

I tried in the past to be constructive and propose UI changes to make it more user friendly, for sure has been improved A LOT since then, but again installing the latest greatest you still easily run in a big “WTF”!

Personally I have been at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Oakland (1st day only) and I participated in one Kubuntu meeting. I was stunned seeing them in a very small room, they were 7 or 8 max, the small room wasn’t even full, discussion were lead by Jonathan Riddell and I could hardly hear, likely they were discussing between them and they couldn’t really care of my presence.
Maybe I arrived late, but I had the feeling that the guys are alone and they are kinda proud of it, while I see Kubuntu going always worse and never be ready for a mass usage.
Last but not least:
I found a bug in KDE 4.7.4 that can lead to HTML Rich Text injection in the killer app dialog: I provided both a test case to reproduce the issue and proposed a patch to fix the issue, do you think they bothered to fix it? Nah! Too boring!

Sono alle prese con il duro lavoro, le scartoffie burocratiche, il dover iniziare una vita semi-nuova e cercare una casa che sia accogliente (cosa non facile qui!).

Il metodo è sempre uguale: interrompere, dire cose che poco c’entrano, svalutare l’interlocutore e se questo però si ribella giustamente, levare le tende per evitare figuracce.
Castelli perché non te ne vai anche dalla scena politica tu e Brunetta? Ci fareste un piacere. Tornate al nord se tanto vi piace, ma restateci, smettetela di raccontare palle per 20 anni sulla Padania e poi prendere stipendio, pensione, benefit da parlamentare romano.

P.S. Castelli a Bologna la tangenziale NON si paga contrariamente a quello che pensi e dici (4m09s del video), ah ma è vero tu sei abituato a non pagare manco quella, perché è tutto spesato da Roma, la Roma che voi continuate a chiamare ladrona. Signor Martone: io mi sono laureato a 27 anni e 10 mesi, tecnicamente sono un quasi sfigato secondo lei.
Peccato che mi sono pagato le rate dell’universita’ da solo facendo lavori legali e onesti che comunque mi hanno aiutato poi a trovare un posto fisso dopo la laurea visto che avevo gia’ un curriculum piu’ ampio di un ‘non sfigato’ che si e’ laureato in tempo e che e’ stato disoccupato mettiamo i primi 1-2 anni.
Tra l’altro appena laureato, anzi 3 mesi prima mentre scrivevo ancora la tesi specialistica, ho trovato un posto a tempo indeterminato a Skype, quel programmino con la ‘S’ blu, lei per caso lo conosce? Forse ce l’ha anche installato e magari lo usa pure.

Saro’ sfigato io, ma a me sembra che di insulti i giovani italiani ne abbiano gia’ presi abbastanza dal governo Berlusconi e dalla sua banda che ha raffazzonato l’Italia, da un governo ‘tecnico’ mi aspettavo piu’ tecnicismi, ma vedo che comunque siete sempre tutti uguali: li’ per scaldare la poltrona, non perdere voti (quindi niente cambiamenti veri e impopolari) e a prendere i vostri soldini che sono circa dalle 10 alle 20 volte rispetto alla media nazionale degli stipendi, senza contare ovviamente pensione e benefit.

Prossima volta il tecnico facciamolo fare al contadino che non arriva a fine mese, parla meglio di voi e forse ne sa qualcosa di piu’ visto che le mani se le sporca davvero!

I payed in advance the renewal and then they sent an email payment didn’t go through.
I called them to make sure they “see” the payment and everything seemed fine at the end, ’till today, when website was not reachable probably because they didn’t pay on behalf of me my domain name, for whatever reason I don’t know. How sucks this? A lot!

I am considering for a new host next time it will expire, open to suggestions!

EDIT: Here is the incredible email they sent me, quoted and later my answer, enjoy and stay away from webhostingpad!

Now… one user pays you in advance following YOUR advert about account AND domain name renewal, user calls you to confirm that you see the payment… and YOU have the face to tell me that your email was not talking about the domain name?
You know what? I don’t like bs, the only thing you must have said was: “Yes we have made TWO mistakes in a row because our payment system is totally unable to work correctly, and even if you called us to make sure everything was right, we fucked up again, we are very sorry.”

Now I don’t need any reply, I don’t want to hear any more bs.

- aumento dell’iva di 2 punti, colpendo tutti e soprattutto la crescita!
- capitali scudati +1,5% ma per favore
- tracciabilità a 1000 Euro, ma perché non a 500 come era prima??

E questa è l’equità di un professorone della Bocconi, ma per piacere. La verità è che siete tutti complici. TUTTI!
